3 Tips for New Campers

You’ve read our list of the most frequently forgotten camping supplies and you’ve purchased that brand new tent or camper.  Now you’re off and making reservations as a new camping family.  Here are a couple of tips we thought of that will help make your first couple of trips less stressful and more successful:

1. Have a Supply Kit

While most campgrounds offer a wide variety of camping tools and necessities, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.  Some items that we recommend to put in a supply kit, (besides the ones we’ve mentioned in previous lists) are: a mini tool set; flash lights, waterproof or batery-less options are your best bets; first aid supplies; and a bit of rope, from leashes to awnings, rope can always make itself useful. By packing a supply kit filled with various items, it stops you from scrambling around at the last minute and puts you at ease knowing that the you are that much more prepared.

2. Check Out the Campground’s Rules & Regulations

In order to respect the campground and those who may be camping close to you, be sure to ask about the campgrounds rules and regulations.  Some important questions to ask:

  • Who is included in the rates? (An unlimited amount of people? Two adults and two children? Etc.)
  • When are check in and check out times?
  • What are your pet policies?
  • Are there quiet hours?
  • What amenities does your campground have? (From pools to bath houses, they all can drastically shape your initial camping experience.)

3. Site Specifics

Another aspect that can really enhance or diminish your camping experience would be the site itself.  Three good things to know about the site you’re booking are: (1) what kind of ground your site has (a gravel site for a tent isn’t too comfortable); (2) if there is a fire pit or picnic table on your site; and (3) is my site shaded or not, while a shady site may be optimal for the summer, an open site will allow you to catch as much of the sun’s rays when it starts to cool down this fall.
