Area Highlight: Shelburne
Our Local Root’sArea Highlights, are meant to be just a spark to help you light up your own trail during your vacation. This first post is on Shelburne, a town just south of us here in Colchester, with attractions to interest the entire family.
The Bonfire (Mini Edition): Although the temperatures reached the 90s, the weekend here at Lone Pine was a wet one. Candy Bar Bingo was in the Rec Hall per usual, and our Outdoor Movie Night was moved to the projector inside. While the Horseshoe Tournament was cancelled (check out our Twitter to stay up-to-date), our very own Activities Director, Sandra Martin, has announced that it will be rescheduled for 4th of July Weekend!
Things to Do:
Shelburne Museum
Taking a different approach to your typical museum, Shelburne Museum uses Vermont’s natural beauty and history to add to every exhibit. Each one is showcased in its individual building (or in the case of the Steamboat Ticonderoga and Locomotive 220/Grand Isle Private Rail Car, they are their own exhibit building, per say), with the outdoor scenery and nature adding to the unique authenticity of the museum. With exhibits from their Circus Building holding circus-related pieces and figurines, to their new exhibit launching June 18th, ”In Fashion: High Style, 1690 – 2011,” there is something for all ages and interests.

Shelburne Farms
If a museum means too much time indoors, then another option for you to explore would be Shelburne Farms. The 1,400 acre farm is home to:
- a Children’s Farmyard, with cows, sheep, a chicken coop, Petunia the Pig (who’s not the most photogenic pig, probably due to the fact that she did just had piglets), and more farm animals and activities;
- an abundance of walking trails to get out into nature and explore the property your own unique way;
- and a view of how they make their farmhouse cheddar cheese.
Want a little guidance throughout your visit? They also offer tours, so that way you won’t miss out on everything they have to offer.

Vermont Teddy Bear Factory
Ever wonder how the famous Vermont Teddy Bear Company bears are made? Offering tours 7 days a week, this stop would be a neat and fun thing to do on a rainy day or if you’re just trying to beat the heat.

Where to Eat:
Klinger’s Bread Company
If you plan to have a later start to the day, Klinger’s Bread Company makes for a good lunch stop before exploring Shelburne. While it’s not in Shelburne, Klinger Bread Company is located right off Shelburne Road and I-89, making really convenient. They serve various gourmet sandwiches and baked goods, and for people who like change, their sandwich menu changes each day offering plenty of selections.
